What is an Ignition Interlock? An ignition interlock is an in-car breath alcohol screening instrument that prevents a vehicle from starting if it detects a driver’s blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over a preset limit. Using the same alcohol sensing technology used by police in roadside screening, the ignition interlock is designed to fit inside the vehicle, near the driver’s seat, and is connected directly to the vehicle’s ignition system. Who needs an Ignition Interlock?Individuals arrested for a second or subsequent offense are required to serve a one year license suspension. About 30 days before the end of the one year license suspension period, participants are notified by PENNDOT as to the date they are eligible to obtain an ignition interlock restricted license. Those individuals convicted of a second or subsequent offense of driving under the influence of alcohol will be required to have an ignition interlock system installed on each motor vehicle owned by the individual before they are eligible to drive again. The system must remain on the vehicle(s) for usually 12 months, and must be used by anyone driving the vehicle, including family and friends. Who pays for the Ignition Interlock and what does it cost?Individuals subject to an ignition interlock are responsible for all installation and maintenance costs and fees. The system costs less than one drink a day. How to get an Ignition Interlock System?Interlock Systems of Pennsylvania (ISP) will make the entire process easy for you.
